TOP Reasons why Reflection Matters when Starting Over

Starting over is more than deciding to change something in life. It is a journey that brings adventure, excitement, and personal growth. It begins with a single step, often taken with mixed emotions, and ends in transformation. There will be detours, unexpected challenges, and moments of doubt. However, these are all part of the process, which unfolds over time.
As you prepare for your journey ahead, it is essential to take time for reflection. Recognizing that starting over doesn’t mean erasing the past; it means learning from it and evaluating what brought you to this point.
Our last post explored seven considerations that may indicate it is time to start over. Today, we will focus on the importance of reflection while starting over.

I recently traveled to Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world. As I prepared for the journey, I thought reflection and starting over were much like packing for a trip. They go hand in hand. You have to carefully plan for the road ahead, considering duration, climate, terrain, packing essentials, and preparing for the unexpected.
Reflection serves a similar purpose. It’s a way of assessing where you’ve been and what you’ve learned, helping you decide which memories, skills, and lessons are worth bringing along as you start over. It allows you to see the bigger picture and accept that it is okay to let go of what no longer serves you.
Learning from the past can help you pinpoint specific decisions, behaviors, or circumstances that led you to where you are today.
Here are some key reasons why reflection is essential when Starting Over:
1. Avoid repeating mistakes
Reflection helps you examine past situations, identifying what worked well and what didn’t. It helps weave a coherent narrative of a situation, giving structure and meaning to what happened, helping you avoid repeating mistakes and replicate positive actions and behaviors.
2. Build on what works
Your past also contains your successes and strengths. Understanding why something works can lead to a more confident and informed approach as you move forward.
3. Develop a growth mindset
A growth mindset is simply the understanding that you can develop skills and abilities through hard work and dedication. Your mind shifts from feeling stuck to thinking about how to solve a challenge or what is needed to achieve a goal. The thought of failure doesn’t hold you down; instead, you are motivated by it. A growth mindset enjoys the challenges, risks, wins, and failures that come with it. It allows us to push ourselves and break through the inner hurdles, helping us embrace the good and the bad. Developing a growth mindset contributes to a more positive and meaningful life. It builds resilience, cultivates patience, allows new perspectives, and fosters gratitude.

4. Strengthen self-awareness
While every situation in life is a new learning experience, examining the past can teach you about yourself. In hindsight, what seemed purely painful at the time might reveal hidden opportunities for growth or unexpected strengths developed during the experience. It can also open the door to learning about triggers or blind spots you weren’t aware of. Embracing this knowledge allows you to start over with a clearer understanding of who you are, making it easier to set realistic goals for the journey ahead.
5. Help shape a strategic plan
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain when starting over. Building on past knowledge enables a smoother transition on the journey ahead. Insights from past experiences provide a foundation for setting achievable goals and developing a strategic plan for your new path.
6. Prepare for new beginnings
Deep reflection creates a sense of closure. It allows us to process past emotions and let go of what was. Closure is not about intellectually understanding what happened; it’s the emotional resolution tied to those experiences, allowing us to move forward without being held back by unresolved thoughts or lingering feelings.
Our lives, filled with past experiences, good or bad, have shaped who we are today and will serve as a foundation for the next steps. Our mistakes provide valuable lessons, and our successes emphasize our strengths.
